Nostalgia
There are times when kids play with video games here I think of the very creative (let me add this so we can lift our collars..) and fun games we used to play as kids (well it was long time back ..). One day I was thinking of all the ones I remember. Here it goes: four corners, seven stones..(girls play this a lot), color color what color, Police thirudan, Pallanguzhi, LTP (anyone remember this...?), set hopping, book cricket..(this was craze one time)..
Wish we could make a compiled list with the set of rules..
Please add more to the list...let me see how many we come up with..

appending priya's comment..
these games too have sex factor. unarchi vasa padaatheenga. porumai. what i meant here is our broad games are classified into boys games and girls games.
probably i think, this is the only one common ground that girls cant complain about the percentage othukeedu with boys.
but i wonder why most of the girl games are incompoundwall. ?!@#$ 'indoor' iurkum bothu ithu iruka koodaathaa..to contrary most of the boys games are under the vegaatha veyil. This 'vegaatha veyil' term is once upon a time now it turned to be very much vegura veyil. But our boys dont care too much about this.
I speak for boys here. most of the time i speak for girls, which is a different issue, he.he.. where is my kerchief ?
In this post i am listing the bottom 5..
5. Mudugu panchar. (technical term)
4. Leg pinch.
3. Kaathaadi.
2. Ice boys.
1. Cricket ( so obvious..)
(kuripu)
bottom la irunthu list panathu naale ithuku per bottom 5.
Mudugu panchar
It's a cousin brother of seven stones. the game name speaks itself for the game. aduthavan muduga panchar aakurarthu with a ball. thanks to our boys that they are not using the cricket ball. then it would have called as mudugu fracture. if a boy mudugu is punctured he is out of the game. the good thing about this game is everybody will run like 'Ben Johnson' with the highest fear because our boys will try to prove that velocity of the ball is beyond infinity.
Leg Pinch
again the name speaks for itself. But the pinch is not by hands but by legs. If you want your legs to look like legs you should wear good shoes. the game is so flexible that you could play anywhere you want. though the most occurence is at the class, during the lunch time. the game starts now...
Easy..if you are the catcher, you have to smash the other people shoes with your boots. what is pinch doing here ?? no cross kostins. if you are smashed, you are out of the game. this game is at its best, when you watch it as a spectator. it brings the best of your flying skills, as you have to only fly to avoid the smash. if you keep the shoes down, crashing, slaming, smashing anything you call, would happen instantly.
Kaathaadi
our boys followed what Wilbur and Orville Wright invented for us. To appreciate we got so many sub classifications which goes like this BANA, BOMBAY which is equivalent to the counterparts MiG-29, MiG-21.
maanja, soosthiram, deal, nool vudrarthu, nool valikarthu, kalangal podurarthu i am ignoring these terms coz it's out of scope of this post. But would love to write on these. Kaathadi sport occupies 2 clients. one client - who flies the kaathadi, other client - who chases the kaathadi which comes in deal. These boys should be considered special as this is the most toughest part, as you need very very koormaiyaana vision to see the nool, and a very good judging capability to judge where the kaathadi will go according to the prevailing wind.
Ice Boys
Ice Boys very much boys game, coz some girls claim it's their game. If i am detailing how to play this game, it's like showing our captain (vijaykanth) how to hit a person who is standing just opposite by turning and hitting with the legs on his face.
This game is also played by some periya boys who want to escape permanently from their g.f's.
Cricket
our national game is Hockey but i donno how many runs you should score to win a hockey match.
Seriously speaking.. It's a shame that most of us dont know about Hockey like as we know about other games.
In India cricket is penetrated into the womb, so that a sachin is born every 2 minutes. Dont have to teach a fish how to swim, it holds true for Indian boys. dont have to teach them how to play cricket. luckily we built apartments and shopping complexes in all the farming lands, otherwise these boys would have converted them into pitch.
getting out of topic...back to road..
when cricket is played this vegura veyil comes into picture... even a boy with good color and complexion will return to home like 'Ambrose'. If that's the case then think of boys like srikanth. In many homes, ammakal said go and come tomorrow without realizing that it's their thavapudalvan.
'cricket playing' is a must to watch in todays situation. In a very small ground 59 teams will play cricket. our boys sharpness again comes into picture, they will be focussing only on their team ignoring the other intruders. And that's why every year girls pass percentage is higher coz boys ignore the intruders teachers
right vudu.. intha mentality irukura varaikum boys a asachika mudiyaathu. ithu enoda karuthu.
cheers
srikanth.
( this is the other srikanth, with good complexion and color not the one who is mentioned in the cricket section. )
he..he..intha kerchief a apo apo engeyo vachidren
Spoke to Ramna and Priya and came with another list of games :The usual dayakattai - the different ones called Adu Puli attam, Aeroplane. We need to get the design from somewhere for these ones, Name-place-things-Animals, Kalla Manna, Fire in the mountain (aka Kola Kolaya mundiri kai..dunno if we have played this sure..elder generation would have), Gilli- golli again we would not have played, Lock and Key (I had almost forgotten this one..thanks to ppriya ).
Number of cards games..bluff, ace
,declare, war declare..caroom, chess, scrabble, Trade-or monopoly,
chinese checkers.
EThana vitutoma..?
BTW how can anyone forget the fights when we used to decide the catcher using "Sha Bhu Three..dont even know how to spell it.." or "Oh God please tell me ..something like that". I remember even the squares on the monopoly board. Again lets see who can guess the names in the board. No googling.
monopoly came into my life 1 month before. so what i am still a kid to learn these things.
another indoor game we forgor to list is
Paramapatham.
In detail..
when researching i could drew some logical conclusion that this game leads to the so called Punch dialogues in our kollywood films.
race la yaaru first porarthunu mukiyam illai, last la yaaru first varaanga athu thaan mukiyam...
aandavan ketavangaluku niraiya kudupaan aana kai vutuduvaan, nalavangaluku konjamaa kudupaan aana kai vuda maataan..
namba captain has the royalty for the punch dialogues, so i am obliged to include a new punch dialogue which is gonna feature in his film soon..
kandavan thodrarthuku naan bhelpoori illai daa, thotaa sudum chola poori
padam peru 'Dharmapoori'..
murugaa, ipove kanna katuthe..
office la i am too much occupied with this tag, so thought of why not take a day off and think upon this. suddenly i remember one more game which is very very very interesting in its own aspects. the game name is called 'LONDON'
How to play this sport..
LONDON
There will be catcher as usual choosed by shaa boo three, the good thing about shaa boo three is, if you become the catcher in the first attempt, then you'll be saying shaa boo three should be done 3 times and the 3rd time is the true one and that's why it's called shaa boo 3 ??@#
the catcher has to turn back and place a stone or something in his palm. then he'll say loudly L..O..N..D..O..N....LONDON.
At that split second once he finishes saying this, he'll turn back and see us, we'll be coming from the start line towards him to take the stone. when he see us, we should be freezed in what ever position you'll be. the best part is now..he'll come closer to us to check that we are all really freezed, the catcher will be saying "i could see his nose breathing" so he is out. this is one of the traps. you should be very aware of these comments, you should still be freezed and no movement at all. after checking everybody he'll go back to his position, turn back and start L..O..N..D..O..N....LONDON.
You'll be progressing slowly but steadily to take the stone and run away. if you are find not freezed, when he turns back, then you'll be the catcher.
wow, what an interesting game..
Neethi : slow and steady wins the race.
why this sport make me say WOW because it's the practice session to stay soranai ilaamal when amma scold me like anything.
Hey, how abt games with Puliyan kottai. If we have a bunch of them, we used to hold in in the gap of thumb and index finger of both the hands..form a shape, blow at it so that a few of them separate out and we need to pick one at a time without shaking it...good game for improving concentration.
Infact the chinese have a diffrent method of playing the same game with thin sticks.
I'm not sure if any of you have listed this game. We used round stones (infact we used to hunt for this kind of stones everywhere I go...) and keep them in the back of our palm, throw them up and flip our palm to catch as many as possible.
Another game that came to my mind is with Sozhi (Shells or Mini-conch - is that the right term?). I know we used to throw the Sozhi and I know there are 2 states to but dont remember how we play...anyone does? Help pls...
Yeah, Ramana got the 3rd game that I mentioned with MiniConches :). The player has to have 6 of them and throw all to the ground. If all faces up, then all the players will grab how many they can, each carrying 10 pts. If all turns down, then the turn goes to next player. If there are shells facing up and down, then we need to hit the up-facing ones with down-facing ones. If the up-facing ones turn down and none of the other shells shakes, then the player gets one point...similarly it will continue for all the up-facing...I think we got it right to some extent...hehehehehe
@ p.priya/ramnaa,
well said. you got it right. this post especially is like reading a technical blog. too many rules and regulations.
i strongly feel that this should be the state game of tamilnadu.
:)
Mami,
Good good...we have played "oru kodam thanni oothi ore poo poothathu" game also.
Also has anyone played Gilli? I think you use 2 small sticks and hit one with the other throwing it up.
How abt Catapult? Y-shaped woodedn piece with a elastic band tied to 2 ends.
Shiva, Srik, - have you used these?
These are games that boys play.
@maami, p.priya,
gilli, goli, bambaram, - i haven't played much, but aware of the rules ?!@#$
:)
